Q3 2023: Arendalsuka summarized
On Thursday, 17th August 2023, North Ammonia and partners invited Arendalsuka stakeholders to a presentation and panel debate with the title: “Partnerships for green fuels to the maritime sector - Now is the time”.
The event covered the following key topics:
Maritime overview and introduction to maritime green projects presented by Vidar Lundberg, Chief Business Development Officer in Grieg Maritime Group (50% owner in North Ammonia through Grieg Edge AS).
Introduction to the potential of co-locating green fuel infrastructure at a strategic industrial site (Slagen Energy Hub, www.slagenenergyhub.com, where North Ammonia is a project partner), presented by Øyvind Rudberg, Terminal Conversion Manager, Esso Norge AS.
Panel debate with the Norwegian environmental organisation Zero, DNV, GreenH (partner in Slagen Energy Hub) and Grieg Maritime Group (partner in Slagen Energy Hub through Grieg Edge and North Ammonia), moderated by Fabian Ødeskaug in North Ammonia.
The main take-aways from the event are:
Norway is in a unique position to build new, green industry
New support regimes from Enova adapted towards the industry’s needs have been launched for hydrogen powered vessels and ammonia powered vessels. The need for increased support budgets are central to accelerate the maritime green transition.
Contracts for Difference (CfD) will be an important tool to implement until CO2-fees and taxes are at a high enough level so that green alternatives are competetive against fossil-based fuels.
The industry is lacking a holistic Norwegian green transition plan from the Government in order to reach climate targets set out for 2030
Green corridors are a good place to start, and identifying the correct locations and ports will be vital, where Slagen Energy Hub is a great example.
Several new initiatives and partnerships with a large potential have been established, which was examplified by Grieg Maritime Group
