Why
The maritime industry is required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with specific targets set for 2030, 2040 and 2050.
At present, there are no commercially and technically available alternatives to cut emissions in line with the IMO targets, 50% absolute GHG emission reduction by 2050 compared to 2008 levels, and national and European Union (EU) absolute GHG emission reduction targets, 55% GHG emission reduction by 2030 in the EU compared to 1990 levels.

Ammonia is produced in vast amounts today, and around 10% of the global annual ammonia production of 200 million tonnes is seaborne traded. As such, ammonia is a well-known and technically proven substance to the shipping industry. It is expected that ammonia will power up to 50% of shipping energy demand within 2050.

Green ammonia does not contain carbon and can be a CO2-emission free fuel on a well-to-wake basis, fully compliant for the foreseeable future of maritime transport.

Green ammonia is an efficient energy carrier and contains approximately 50% more energy than hydrogen on a volumetric basis.
