Next generation green fuels

We originate and develop projects to produce green ammonia

North Ammonia was established by Arendals Fossekompani and Grieg Maritime Group in 2021 to enable decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industrial such as the maritime and industrial sectors. As of July 2024, the owners consist of Swiss Life Asset Managers and Grieg Maritime Group

North Ammonia leverages strong industrial experience from our owners and partner with selected world-class companies to execute our portfolio of projects.

Why

With the EU 2030 Climate Target Plan, the Commission proposes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to at least 55% below 1990 levels by 2030.

Additionally, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has set a target of reducing the carbon intensity in international shipping by at least 40% by 2030.

To succeed, the industry needs to cooperate in new ways, establish cross-discipline partnerships and invest in new technologies and infrastructure, to maintain our planet as we know it.

What

Green ammonia is an energy dense chemical substance and energy carrier which does not contain carbon.

The product is widely acknowledged as an attractive clean energy alternative for the maritime industry and as a feedstock in chemical and feritilizing manufacturing processes.

For the maritime industry, green ammonia can be combusted in an internal combustion engine, or be converted to electric power through a fuel cell.

How

Green ammonia is produced using renewable power, water and air, and can be scaled to meet the global clean energy demand for hard-to-abate sectors such as deep sea maritime transport.

Green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis with renewable power supply and can be a zero-emission production process.

Following the production of green hydrogen, nitrogen is reacted with hydrogen in an ammonia synthesis reactor, to produce green ammonia.
